Sylhet farmers interested to cultivate pulses

Farmers of the four districts of Sylhet Division are showing more interest in farming different varieties of pulses.
Sources said, pulse cultivation has been increasing in the region since the last year’s dry season and the trend continues this season too.
Under the Rabi crops cultivation programme, Mashkalai has been cultivated in 1,243 hectares of land, Masur in 309 hectares, Khesari in 123 hectares, Sesame seed (Til) in 105 hectares, French bean in 4731 hectares, and pea has been cultivated in 58 hectares of land.
Gram, Mung, Arhar and leanseed has also been cultivated on vast tract of lands in the division.
A number of farmers said pulse cultivation was not popular in the region. But due to high market prices, farmers here have been farming pulses for the last few years due to high market prices.
National Krishi Award winner farmer Abdus Sobhan of Dakshin Surma upazila said, farmers are getting more involved with crops like pulse adopting mechanised irrigation system.
The DAE have set demonstration plots of the crops for disseminating knowledge and technology among the common farmers, officials said.
Youth commits suicide
A youth commit suicide in Osmaninogor on Tuesday night. His name is A Latib Shahin Son of late Haji Rashidullah Rangapur Village under Osmaninogor Upazila. On receiving news police sent body of hospital for autopsy. According to SI Ram Prashad the deceased sleep him room at 10.00 pm onn Wednesday morning family member found him dead. A case register in local Police station.
