Sylhet declared free from early-marriage

Sylhet District has been declared free from early-marriage by Mr. N.M Ziaul Alam, Secretary of the Cabinet Division (Co-ordination and Reforms) in a meeting of cross-section of people at Aman Ullah Convention Hall at Baluchar, at eastern part of Sylhet City this noon. This declaration has been made in Sylhet District, the first under the jurisdiction of early marriage-free area in the country. The slogan “No marriage to adolescent daughter .
 They will become world conqueror” depicted the theme of the declaration, the epoch-making one in the history of Sylhet. Mr. Alam delivered his lecture as Chief Guest, denouncing early-marriage to adolescent (below 18) daughters who, at the later part of their life suffer from diseases as per sequel to the early marriage. Criticizing the parents for marrying off their daughters before 18 years, they are held responsible for the vulnerability of teen-aged mother’s life.
The Cabinet Secretary said, Sylhet is the holy land of Saints Hazrat Shah Jalal (R.) and Shah Paran (R.) for which the government gives priority in materializing all development programmes. During the present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule, the number of early-marriage has been retarded and in Sylhet district it is nil. Phase wise, the other districts will be declared free from early-marriage, a curse to safe motherhood and threat to women’s reproductive health.
Presided over by Md. Zainul Abedin DC Sylhet, the meeting was addressed among others by Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Mr. Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Sylhet District AL Secretary Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury.
While delivering chairperson’s speech Mr. Jainul Abedin disclosed 42 early-marriages were prevented in 2015 while the number has come down to 12.
