Different areas of Sylhet city have been affected by water-logging due to incessant rains. On Thursday night, water entered the houses in different neighborhoods of the city due to excesses rain. Besides, water has overflowed in the canals and rhymes. The people of the city have gone through a night of misery due to sudden waterlogging.
It has been seen on the spot that in front of the DC office of the city, Lama Bazar, Shibganj, Senpara, Sonarpara, Upshahar, Mendibagh, Supply, Darjibandh, Kajalshah, Laladighi and other areas have been flooded. Talking to the residents of those areas, it is learned that as a result of continuous rain on Thursday night, houses and roads were flooded.
However, when the rain subsided before Fajr, the water started receding.
A resident of Sonapara area said that water entered the house during the night rain. Later, furniture and other items had to be placed on a high place. As the Sonapara area is relatively low, waterlogging is caused by light rains, he said.
A resident of Laladighi Par area said that water suddenly started accumulating in front of the house around 2 pm. At half past two the water in front of the house enters the house. They had to be thrown into buckets. However, the water has decreased in the morning.
Meanwhile, incessant rains are also increasing in the Surma river flowing through the heart of Sylhet city. In Kushighat, Kalighat and Sheikhghat areas adjacent to Surma river of the city, it has been seen that the water of the river is full.
The traders said that if the water level rises further, water will enter the business establishments including that area.
However, officials from the Water Development Board said that the waters of Surma and Kushiara have not yet crossed the danger line, but the river water is rising.
According to the Sylhet Meteorological Department, it is raining in Sylhet due to the cyclone Ashani and even after the end of the cyclone, the rain may continue till May 16.
Another reports says: Heavy rains and downpours have raised water levels in all rivers in Sylhet. Meanwhile, the waters of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers have crossed the danger line and are flowing near the danger line.
The Water Development Board is fearing floods.
Various areas of Sadar, Kompaniganj, Gowainghat, Jaintapur and Kanaighat upazilas of Sylhet have been flooded. Crop lands and halitala have been submerged. Water has seeped into some parts of the metropolis. Waterlogging has also occurred in many areas.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mojibor Rahman is visiting different areas of the metropoliton.
Upazila Nirbahi officers have also been directed to take necessary steps. Besides, 79 metric tons of rice has been allotted by the district administration for Sadar, Companiganj, Gowainghat, Jaintapur and Kanaighat upazilas.
The family of NGO Ashar field worker Apurudra Pal, who was killed in a landslide in Golapganj upazila, has been given cash assistance of Tk 20, the deputy commissioner said.
