Sylhet Correspondent :
Sylhet Central Jail under Construction works would be completed soon and it would start functioning by December this year. The project was taken up in 2012 on the 30-acre land on suburban Badaghat area after the government decided to shift the too-old central jail from the heart of the city. It was established in 1789 as the central jail for Sylhet and the then Assam.
The old one can’t cope with the present situation, the jail officials said. However, the old site on the city’s central area would be turned into a park.
Project Director of the Sylhet Central Jail construction project Abul Kalam Azad informed about 95 per cent works on the much-desired projcet had already been finished while some petty and finishing works like setting security equipments, tree plantation, setting electricity and gas connections etc were nearing completion. Jail inmates from the existing jail buildings would be shifted to the new buildings by then, he added, while addressing a view exchange meeting.
