Cattle markets in the Sylhet city and Sylhet district have gained momentum with lots of buyers and thousands of sacrificial animals swarming, as only a few days are left for the Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival for the Muslims A huge number of sacrificial animals are being brought for sale at different cattle markets in the city including Kazir Bazar, Jalalpur Bazar, Lalabazar, Tukerbazar and Muglabazar areas. Traders said there is huge supply of cattle to the markets and their prices were exorbitant in some extent in comparison to the previous year’s Eid-ul-Azha.
There is no shortage of cattle supply to the markets despite a total ban on cattle and buffalo imSylhet from the neighboring country this year, said Santo, a cattle trader, who came from Boroikandi.
In addition to the city’s biggest cattle market- scores of temporary markets started drawing attention of the buyers.
Besides the local buyers, the wholesale cattle traders are sending the cattle’s at the markets of the Sylhet city and different upazilas of the district after purchasing them from different districts of the country.
Traders said that the price of sacrificial animals was steady but the price may shoot up a bit because of the soaring price of animal food and transport cost this year. “Transport fare might have an impact on the cattle price,” said Ali Hossain, a cattle trader at Kazirbazar.
Meanwhile, currency screening machines were installed in some of the cattle markets in the city and the district with a view to checking the use of fake notes in the markets.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), sources told that it has taken all necessary measures to ensure law and order in and around the cattle markets.
SMP had taken measures so that the cattle markets are not set up on roads and streets disrupting the vehicular movement and it had already launched strong traffic management in order to ease traffic congestion in areas surrounding cattle markets.
