S A Shofiee, Sylhet :
With only three days left for the Eid-ul-Azha, cattle markets in the Sylhet, including the permanent one at Kazirbazar were buzzing with buyers and traders alike on Saturday. However, traders said sales in the cattle markets were yet to pick up.
Apart from the permanent cattle market at Kazirbazar, six temporary cattle markets were set up in Sylhet City Corporation areas.
“Cattle trade at Kazirbazar started in a full swing from Friday and we expect that the sales will reach the peak in the next few days,” said Afsor Uddin, director of Kazirbazar Cattle Market.
A large number of cattle have been brought to Sylhet ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, and many more are on the way. Many buyers are alleging that cattle prices are higher this year while the traders are claiming that they had to purchase local cattle this year at higher price.
Huge number of cow, goat, sheep, camel, dumba goat and buffalo were seen at the cattle markets on Saturday. Many interested buyers were seen visiting the markets to choose their sacrificial animals.
Big locally raised cows, camels and dumba have been drawing huge attention at the cattle markets as crowds were seen surrounding the large cows in the market.
Most of the cattle brought to Kazirbazar and other cattle markets are home-reared, though a few Indian cattle were also seen at the markets.
Cattle trader Asab Ali, who came to Kazirbazar from Dakshin Surma with two large cattle, said, “These Australian cattle are three years old – I raised them to sell at Kazirbazar market.” “I am asking Tk 10 lakh for each of the cattle weighing between 1,050 and 1,000 kg.” Prices for the cattle weighing about 450 kg to 1000 kg are ranging between Tk 1 to 10 lakh, he informed.
Nazmul Hasan, GM of SP Group, bought a cow at Tk 55,000 from Kazirbazar. He alleged that cattle price is higher than the previous year.
Sahadat Hossain, who had brought 24 goats from Sunamgonj, said he has already sold 12 goats from his stock. He was asking Tk 25,000 for each of the two big goats he had put on sale. He, however, said price of goat is lower this year as the buyers are preferring cow.
Many buyers were also seen visiting the makeshifts markets and checking cattle prices before making a decision to buy one.
Fake notes flood Sylhet Eid market: Hoodwinking the Eid shoppers at different shopping malls in the Sylhet city, counterfeit note business syndicates have become hyperactive now a days. The syndicates are also trying to circulate fake money in the local cattle markets.
Law enforcers have recovered several hauls of counterfeit notes but a large number of dealers are doing their business targeting the Eid shoppers, police sources told. Anonymous police sources said Sylhet is the center of producing counterfeit notes and spreading it all over the country. The first group produces the counterfeit notes in the capital and hands those over to the second group in the Sylhet city. The second group delivered the notes to members of the third group who are engaged in transactions with people.
