The business leaders of Sylhet Sunday expressed their helplessness during the ongoing blockade and sought necessary security while transporting goods on Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
Sala Uddin Ahmed, president of Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), said that the losses of trade and commerce due to the ongoing blockade and strike stood at Tk 5 thousand crore in the last 15 days. He said this while presenting a picture of sufferings at a view exchange meeting with the civil administration, law enforcing agencies and trade body leaders in the Sylhet city.
The recommendations include heightening security on Dhaka-Sylhet highway and beefing up intelligence vigil, keeping Sylhet Port, banks, Customs, C&F and other related offices open on the weekly holidays, forming a monitoring taskforce for smoothly running of the customs House activities comprising the representatives from all the stake holders including customs, law enforcing agencies.
Though the law enforcing agencies are providing security to us for transporting goods, the transport cost has spiraled two to three times,’ said Ahmed.
‘We urge all political parties to shun any subversive programme which only adds woes to the economy and the people of the country. The political parties should look for an alternative ways to press their demands shunning hartal or blockade,’ added the chamber president.
Jamil Chowdhury, president of Consumer Association Bangladesh said that the consumers of the country were the worst sufferers of any political unrest. ‘Some unscrupulous businessmen taking advantage of the unrest situation are hiking the price of essentials. None is caring for the consumers,’ he added.
DIG of Police (Sylhet) Mizanur Rahman said ‘We are always prepared to provide escort to the goods-laden transports on the highway. We have intensified our special drive to nab the arsonists in 4 districts under Sylhet Division. We have already identified the arsonists and arresting them,’.
