Swimmer Ariful Islam of Bangladesh became third in the heat of the men’s 50 metre freestyle of the swimming competition at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan on Friday. His compatriot Junaina Ahmed finished fifth in the heat of the women’s 50 metre freestyle of the swimming competition at the Tokyo Olympics on the same day.
Ariful took 24.81 seconds to become third out of eight competitors. It is his best timing in his career. Earlier, his best timing was 24.92 seconds. He made this timing in the World Championship in South Korea in 2019.
Ariful borne the national flag in the march past of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics on July 23. The best 16 swimmers have qualified for the final round. Ariful failed to qualify for the final round but he made a satisfactory result by breaking his previous timing record.
Meanwhile, Junaina Ahmed took 29.78 seconds in her heat but she also made her best timing. Earlier, she took 30.96 seconds in the World Championship in South Korea in 2019.
Coach Nibedita Das was with Ariful Islam and Junaina Ahmed during their respective competitions. Ariful Islam and Junaina Ahmed were out of the Tokyo Olympics.
Earlier, shooter Abdullah Hel Baki, country’s best archer Ruman Shana, female archer Diya Siddique of Bangladesh bade Tokyo Olympics good-bye.
