Flood water submerged crop fields in at least four northern districts as major rivers kept swelling over the last week following intermittent to heavy rains inside the country as well as in the upstream.
The Jamuna River was flowing above its danger level at Shariakandi and Dhunat upazilas in Bogura district and Bahadurabad in Jamalpur district. The floods submerged low-lying areas in these districts.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre predicted on Monday afternoon that fresh areas could be inundated in Bogura, Gaibandha, Sirajganj and Jamalpur in next 24 hours.
An FFWC bulletin said, the water levels in the Jamuna and the Padma will keep on rising over the next 24 hours.
Our Bogura correspondent reported that the swelled Jamuna submerged 622 hectares of crop fields in the chars of Shariakandi and Dhunat upazilas.
Several hundred families have been marooned in six unions, he reported.
According to the Sariakandi upazila agriculture office, standing rice, legumes and chilli crops on a 565-hectares have been submerged by gushing flood waters.
About 3,000 farmers are at the risk of losing their crops, it said.
Over a hundred families in Chaluabari, Kajla, Bohail, Hatsherpur, Kutubpur and Sadar unions have been marooned by the flood waters.
Water Development Board executive engineer in Bogura Hasan Mahmud told the media that the Jamuna was likely to keep swelling until Thursday.
In Dhunat, standing crops on 57 hectares have gone under flood waters.
The Uliabazar neighborhood in Islampur, Jamalpur could be inundated any moment since the embankment on the Jamuna to protect the area developed breaches at many points.
Locals are struggling to plug the breaches in the embankment but the efforts could be counterproductive if the river swells further.
