Swedish Speaker to see climate change impacts, actions in BD

The Speaker of Swedish Parliament, Urban Ahlin, now in city on a five-day visit, will make a visit to the countryside this week to observe the effects of climate change and actions taken to support local communities in Bangladesh.
A visit to an RMG factory will also take place along with meetings with factory management, workers and trade unions during his Dhaka visit.
He is leading a delegation of seven members of parliament to the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) here, the Swedish Embassy in Dhaka said on Saturday.
The other Swedish parliamentarians visiting Bangladesh are Krister Örnfjäder (Social Democratic Party), Anti Avsan (Moderate Party), Monica Green (Social Democratic Party), Teres Lindberg (Social Democratic Party), Kalle Olsson (Social Democratic Party) and Johanna Jönsson (Centre Party).
The Parliament of Bangladesh is hosting the IPU Assembly with its President Saber Hossain Chowdhury in the chair. One of the focus areas of the parliamentary meeting is to reduce inequalities within and among countries with a particular focus on vulnerable groups such as children, women and the poor.
During the visit, the Swedish Speaker will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and have meetings with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and with his counterpart Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.
The Swedish parliament – the ‘Riksdag’ – consists of 349 members, elected every four years.
