Sylhet Bureau :
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is ready to reopen maintaining health rules including social distancing when the pandemic situation will improve.
According to the SUST authorities, when the coronavirus situation will be improved and the government will instruct them to resume academic activities the university will be reopened.
In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, on March 16, the government closed all the educational institutions of the country to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Later, on August 27, it also extended the closure until October 3.
On the other hand, the students want to get back their campus as they are bored and frustrated by staying at their respective homes for last five months.
They are also demanding of reopening the university by October through various social media like facebook, publican, publican family and other groups or pages.
However, the SUST authority is not thinking to reopen the university right away as they are waiting for decision from the education ministry or the University Grants Commission.
SUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed says that can’t put our students in danger by inviting them to campus right now. Besides, either the education ministry or the University Grants Commission has not given any instruction about reopening of the university, However, he said, when the university will reopen, the conditions including maintaining health guidelines, hygiene, and social distancing will be imposed on both teachers and students.
Farid Uddin Ahmed said the university syndicate and other stakeholders will hold talks about the latest situation and later the decision will be taken in this regard.
Besides, if we get green signal from the government and health experts we will reopen our institution and resume academic activities in limited scale. In this regard, students of postgraduate, M Phil and PhD will be given the priority, he added.
The SUST VC also said the academic activities of the undergraduate students will also be resumed in phases.
We have only three male and two female residential halls. Besides, the university authorities also run some private dormitories outside the main campus especially for female students. Apart from these, a significant number of students reside privately near the university area of Sylhet city, he said.
Farid Uddin Ahmed said student housing shortage still an acute problem due to insufficient residential halls as the number of student has grown to 10922 right now.
