SUST expels 4 BCL activists for harassing schoolgirl

Authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on Saturday expelled four students of the university, all of whom were also members of Bangladesh Chhatra League, for one semester for sexually harassing a schoolgirl on the campus.
The expelled students were Mahmudul Hasan Rudra of social work department, Sazzad Hossain Riad of statistics, Suman Sarker Jonny of political studies and Rahat Siddiqui of anthropology department, sources at the university administration said.
University proctor Zahir Uddin confirmed that four BCL activists had been expelled for a six-month semester and said the decision was taken by a disciplinary committee meeting held at noon. ÔPresident of the campus unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League Sanjiban Chakrabarti Partha was warned in connection with the harassment incident.
Besides, Rahath and Jonny were fined Tk 1,000 each on charge of assaulting two journalists who tried to resist them during the incident,Õ said the university proctor.
The punitive measures were taken following the recommendations made by a probe committee which submitted its report on June 4, he added.
On April 8, a female candidate of secondary school certificate examination allegedly was sexually harassed on the university campus by a group of activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League.
Later, the victimÕs mother filed a case with the Woman and Children Repression Tribunal in this regard on April 12 against eight BCL activists, including Partha.
The tribunal issued arrest warrants against the accused although no arrests were made yet.
