A clash between rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Thursday prompted the authorities to declare the university closed sine die. The university authorities asked the male students leave the campus by 7:00 pm today (Thursday) and the female students by 9:00 am on Friday. The decisions were taken at an emergency meeting of the university teachers this (Thursday) afternoon. Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and additional police have been deployed on the campus following the clash in the morning. An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was killed and 17 others were injured in an intra-party clash of the ruling party’s student wing over establishing supremacy on the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) campus. The deceased was identified as Sumon, a student of Sylhet International University, a private university in the city. Campus sources said the clash ensued between the Uttam-Anjan and Partho-Sabuj groups of BCL around 10:00 am over establishing dominance on the campus, leaving 15 people injured. The two groups exchanged gunshots during the melee that left three BCL activists critically injured. The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared Sumon dead. The two groups at the time vandalised at least 40 rooms of Shah Paran Hall of the SUST.
