UNB, Dhaka :
The Appellate division of the Supreme Court on Sunday upheld the suspension order of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul issued by the Local Government Ministry.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order.
On May 7, the Local Government Ministry issued the order suspending the RCC mayor after police submitted chargesheets against him in four cases of vandalism and arson attacks.
Following a petition moved by the RCC mayor, the High Court on May 28 stayed the ministry’s order.
Later, the State filed a petition with Chamber Judge’s Court of the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the HC order.
On June 4, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hasan Fayez Siddique stayed the High Court order.
On June 14, the judge sent the petition to the regular bench of the Appellate Division, headed by the Chief Justice for hearing.
BNP-backed candidate Bulbul was elected RCC mayor on January 15, 2013. Bulbul has been facing five criminal cases filed in connection with street
violence during the BNP-led 20-party’s anti-government movement before and after the Januray-5, 2014 election. On June 1, councillor Nizam-ul Azim was made acting mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation following Bulbul’s suspension.
