Staff Reporter :
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Sunday expressed deep concern over Malaysian government’s decision to stop taking migrant workers from Bangladesh.
TIB also said it might bring striking negative impact on country’s migrant labour market and economy too.
TIB, in a press statement, came up with the observations in reaction to media report on Malaysian government’s decision of suspending taking migrant workers from Bangladesh due to corrupt practices followed in the manpower recruitment process.
Though he expressed deep concern in the development, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, however, said “I want to ask Bangladesh government to take the Malaysian government’s decision as a positive one as it brought forth the opportunity to get rid of syndication in manpower sending process.”
He said the Bangladesh government can still have a chance to send workers through discussion with Malaysian government but before that it has to put in place a ‘syndicate-free’ recruitment system.
The TIB executive director also said the government should take visible steps to make the workers sending process free and competitive one for all agencies and to take initiatives to fix a logical expense to send workers in a transparent way.
Otherwise, he feared of Bangladesh losing the huge Malaysian labour market for its remittance earners.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said “Those who are backing the illegal syndicate are not out of government’s knowledge but they are still active. So, I ask government to take immediate step to make the market a fair one.”
