The government on Monday issued an order reinstating suspended Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor
Moniruzzaman Moni as per the directives of the High Court
Additional Secretary of Local Government Division, Jyotirmoy Datta told UNB that the government has issued a letter in this regard. On November 14, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order that stayed the suspension of the mayor.
The KCC Mayor was suspended last year as charge-sheets were submitted against him in two criminal cases on November 2, 2015. Following a plea against the government order, the High Court stayed that suspension order on June 7. Later, the mayor filed a writ challenging the government order.
Moni was elected KCC Mayor defeating ruling Awami League-backed candidate Talukdar Abdul Khaleque in the city polls held in June, 2013.
On June 11 this year, a local court accepted chargesheets against 56 people, including Moni, in two criminal cases over arson and attacks on law enforcers.
