Recently sacked Jamalpur Dewanganj Municipal Mayor Mohammad Shahnawaz Shah had no plans to leave the country; He had been hiding for several days to avoid the arrest. And for this, he chose the capital city, said Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
RAB Law and Media Branch Commander Khandaker Al Moin told it to the media on Thursday morning in a spot briefing.
Khandaker al-Moin said that a case was filed against him after the incident. After that, he went into hiding. He was also involved with a group, trying to meet with the senior leaders of that group. But he did not get any cooperation from anyone.
Because, his behavior was disgusting and shameful. So he was expelled from the both party and the Ministry of Local Government. He kept himself in hiding for safety, RAB officials added.
Asked why had he insulted the education official? The RAB official said, “There was arrogance in him. We have seen examples of abuse of power against him.” Besides, already five cases were filed against him.
Among the various cases, police assault is mentionable.
On the day of the incident, he got agitated and insulted the education officer for a trivial reason.
Today we interrogated him, so far I understand there was the effect of drugs in addition to arrogance, RAB officials further said.
Meanwhile, a case is being filed against the Mayor under the Narcotics Act.
The case will be filed by the RAB as a plaintiff in the capital’s Uttara East police station; a RAB official said.
Earlier, RAB had cordoned the Hotel de Meridian yesterday morning to arrest the municipal mayor accused of physically assaulting the Dewanganj Upazila Secondary Education Officer in Jamalpur during the Victory Day celebrations.
