Staff Reporter :
Jatiotabadi Ainjibi Forum, an organisation of the pro-BNP lawyers, on Thursday urged the government to give her an opportunity to undergo treatment as per her choice by suspending the sentence according to the Section 401(1) of the code of criminal procedure (CrPC).
The lawyers also said that it is only the government that has the jurisdiction to suspend the sentence as per law.
In a press conference, they expressed their optimism that the government will release Khaleda in the interest of her treatment to expose goodwill.
Jatiotabadi Ainjibi Forum organised the press conference on Thursday on the Supreme Court premise.
Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Central Convener of the Jatiotabadi Ainjibi Forum, read a written statement in the press conference. Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali, Advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan
and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, among others, attended the program.
“Khaleda needs advance treatment as per the report of the Medical Board of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). But no initiative has been taken yet in this regard. The ruling party leaders are going abroad for their better treatment with the money from exchequer. But the government is not giving the opportunity to the three times former prime minister to go abroad for better treatment at her own cost. It is the ultimate expression of political vengeance of the ruling party,” read the statement.
“The government would not have been able to jail a popular leader like Khaleda Zia had there been rule of law in the country. As per the existing law of the country, she is eligible for getting bail in the two cases in which she was sentenced. Misfortune it is that the apex court of the country had rejected her bail. That is why people’s confidence in the country’s judiciary has fallen, we think,” also read the statement.
Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia landed in jail on February 8, 2018, after a Dhaka court sentenced her to five years imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust case. The High Court on October 30 in the same year enhanced the punishment of Khaleda to 10 years imprisonment in this case.
Besides, a Dhaka court on October 29, 2018, convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to seven years’ imprisonment in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. The apex court on December 12, 2019, rejected her bail petition in the case.
