A suspected murderer was killed in a gunfight with Detective Branch (DB) of police in the city’s Mirpur Pirerbag area in the early hours of Friday.
The dead is said to be involved with the murder of DB Police Inspector Jalal Uddin who was killed on March 19 during an operation.
According to police, a team was sent to Pirerbag 60ft Bhanga Bridge area based on a tip-off around 2:00am to detain the murder suspect named Hassan. Sensing the presence of police, a group of criminal started firing at the team and in retaliation the police team shot back.
However, Hassan’s accomplices managed to flee the scene. Later, police recovered the body of Hassan from there.
Mirpur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Khandakar Manjur Rahi said that police recovered three firearms from the scene, including the guns that were stolen from two sergeants on January 11 from a house in Pirerbag.
A DB police official said, “We had received information that Hassan was in Pirerbag area with his accomplices and based on that the team conducted the operation but like the previous raid, Hassan and his accomplices started firing as soon as they saw the police.”
He also stated that the body found at the scene was primarily identified as Hasan. The police even matched the body with pictures of Hassan taken previously. However, his family will be brought in on Friday to make the body identification official.
On January 11, two guns were stolen from a house in Mirpur’s Pirerbag area. The guns belonged to Sergeant Mamunur Rashid and Sohel Rana.
Over two months after the incident, on March 19, a team of DB police ran an operation in Pirerbag house number 1021. The team first wanted to cordoned of the house before the operation as they were planning to go into a tin-shed house on the roof of the two-storey building.
Inspector Jalal Uddin was trying to climb up when the miscreants noticed him and hit him with a brick. Later, they shot him twice in the head.
DB Inspector Jahangir alias Jalal Uddin died of brain damage in Square Hospital around 2:00am on March 20.
The DB official said Hasan was part of a gang of thieves who cut the window grills of residential houses and robbed them. There are several cases against him and his associates.
The police are trying to track down Hasan’s associates Manik and others who were connected to the incident.
