Surrendered jungle pirates of Sundarbans yet to be rehabilitated

In order to return to the normal life as many as 48 members belonging to six different notorious gangs of jungle pirates of Sundarban forest including their ring leaders surrendered to the home minister and law enforcing agencies during the last five months on 4 different occasions. Jungle pirates of ‘Master Bahini’ surrendered ceremonially to the Home Minister for the first time and 10 members of the gang have already released on bail.
 Some 11 jungle pirates belonging to ‘Shanto Bahini and Alam Bahinis’ were also released from Bagerhat jail hajat on Thursday after their bail petitions were granted by the District and Session judge of Bagerhat but they were not rehabilitated by the government so far. The processing of their rehabilitation progrmme is still under the consideration of the Headquarters of RAB.
Major Adnan Kabir, Deputy Commander of RAB-8 who played an important role in connection with the surrendering of the jingle pirates of Sundarban forest to the Home Minister and the law enforcing agencies disclosed, at the first phase 10 jungle pirates were released from jail and they are now living in their respective areas. They all hail from Perikhali and Foila under Rampal Upazila in Bagerhat district, Chila under Mongla Upazila in the same district and Koira in Khulna district.
 They all are now under the direct surveillances of police of the local Police Stations. The detective branch of RAB is also is keeping an eye on their movements. The local people’s representatives are also monitoring their activities regularly. He added, 10 jungle pirates who were released on bail are not involved in any criminal activities so far. The local people appreciated them as they left the piracy and returned to the normal life and they have already extended their helping hands to the jungle pirates. In some cases the local people cannot accept them for their past activities.
 In such a case RAB, police and the people’s representatives are trying to motivate the people to help the jungle pirates. He further added, as per the declaration, some proposals were sent to the headquarters of RAB for the rehabilitation of the jungle pirates (who gave up the piracy and returned to the normal life). After the approval of those proposals and after the placing of fund they will be rehabilitated and they will be engaged in alternative professions. According to a reliable source of RAB-8, it has so far recovered some 632 fire arms, 17 thousand 4 hundred 59 rounds of ammunitions through a number of raids. At the same time the RAB-8 arrested as many as 213 bandits.
It may be mentioned here that some 48 jungle pirates of Sundarban forest surrendered to the law enforcing agencies along with 117 fire arms, 7 thousand rounds of ammunitions during the period from May 31 to October 20.
At first 10 members belonging to ‘Master Bahini’, the most notorious gang of jungle pirates of Sundarban forest surrendered with 52 foreign and home made fire arms and 4500 rounds of ammunitions on May 31, 11 jungle pirates including their ring leaders belonging to ‘Majnu and Ilias Bahinis’ surrendered with 25 fire arms and 1020 rounds of ammunitions on July 14, some14 active jungle pirates belonging to ‘Alam and Shanto Bahinis’ surrendered with 20 fire arms and 1008 rounds of ammunitions on September 07 and at last 13 active members including their leader Md. Alamgir Shaikh alias Sagar belonging to notorious ‘Sagar Bahini’ with 20 fire arms and 596 rounds of ammunitions on October 20. The RAB-8 also arrested 6 more jungle pirates (who were not willing to surrender) belonging to ‘Sagar Bahini’ on October 19.
