As the water level of the Surma River recedes, the river erosion continues. This river erosion in Jugirgawn village under Mogalgaow Union of Sylhet Sadar Upazila has continued for thirty years. Earlier, this river erosion site of Jugirgawn Village was also visited by late Minister M Saifur Rahman. and Speaker Humayun Rashid Chowdhury. In 2020, Md. Hiron Miah, Chairman of Mughalgaon Union, assured t of Yogirgaon village several times to take steps to stop the erosion , but still nothing has been done. As a result, four families have already become destitute, their houses have gone under watere.
Rahim Ullah, who is under threat on the banks of the river, said that this erosion of Surma river has been going on for 30 years, only we have been hearing assurances, no one is fulfilling our hopes and not making them into reality.
Azir Uddin of the village said that our houses have been destroyed here in the past few days, so far, about 100 families of Yogir Gao village have been left destitute due to the destruction of the river Surma. Protect us, protect us, protect us, they wished the honorable home minister.
Meanwhile, acting chairman of Mogalgawn Union, Neshar Ahmad, visited to see the river erosion. He said what I saw when I came, the breaking of Surma river is a terrible break in Mogalgaon Union. Apart from that, the Sylhet-Sunamganj road is right next to the mosque, school, petrol pump and many other things. There is a need to prevent this or the government will suffer further and these families will become destitute. Therefore, the Chairman of the Upazila and the Hon’ble Minister of Home Affairs wished for the good opinion.
He said that he has already spoken to Hon’ble Foreign Minister PS Jewel Ahmed and he has assured to take immediate action.
