Bangladesh Awami League Advisory Committee member Suranjit Sengupta yesterday testified in the two August 21 grenade attack cases.
Judge Shahed Nur Uddin of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 yesterday recorded the depositions of Sengupta and fixed Tuesday to cross-examine him in the cases. Of the 491 witnesses of the case, the court so far recorded the depositions of 203 on different dates.
The court conducted the day’s proceedings of the cases at the makeshift court set up on the Alia Madrasa
ground of Bakshibazar in the city.
A number of grenades were set off in an Awami League rally at the Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka on August 21, 2004, when the party was in the opposition. The deadly attack left 24 people, including former President Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman, dead and 73 injured. Grenade splinters also impaired the hearing capacity of the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Two cases, one for killing and injuries while, another for explosions were filed after the incident.
CID Police Super Abdul Kahhar Akand was made the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case. On July 3, 2011, he submitted the charge sheets of the cases against 52 people adding 30 people including BNP leader Tareque Rahman. Twenty-five people including former State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar, former Deputy Minister Abdus Salam Pintu and Mufti Abdul Hannan are in the jail in the cases.
Besides, eight accused of the cases- including retired Lt Commander Saiful Islam Duke, former IGP Md Ashraful Huda, police officers Shahidul Haque and Khoda Box Chowdhury and former Word Commissioner Arifur Rahman are on bail in the cases. On the other hand 18 accused including Tareque Rahman, Harris Chowdhury and Kazi Mofazzel Hossain Kaikobad on the run in the cases.
