Conductor was driving the bus of the Suprobhat Paribahan that killed a student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury in the city’s Pragati Sarani on March 19.
As the driver was arrested for running over a girl earlier the same day, the conductor Md Yasin Arafat was driving the bus.
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) disclosed this in a press briefing in the city on Wednesday.
“Md Yasin, the conductor who was driving the bus during the accident does not have a driving licence,” said Abdul Baten, an additional commissioner of DB.
Yasin was held from a brickfield in Shahrasthi upazila of Chandpur district around 6:30am on Wednesday and the bus helper Md Ibrahim from Dhaka’s Madhya Badda on Wednesday morning as per Yasin’s information, the DB official said.
Meanwhile, Yasin and Ibrahim were put on seven-day remand on Wednesday when they were produced in a Dhaka court by the DB’s Inspector and Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Kazi Shariful Islam.
Earlier, Sirajul Islam, the driver of the bus left Sadarghat accompanied by his helper Ibrahim and conductor Yasin at around 6:00 am on March 19, said Abdul Baten.
Sinthiya Sultana Mukta, a student of Mirpur Ideal Girls Laboratory College, was severely injured at Shahajadpur’s Bashtala when she was hit bt the bus. The passengers of the bus detained driver Sirajul Islam and handed him to police.
“The bus was parked beside the road that time. Yasin called Nani Gopal, the owner of the bus. The owner instructed him to take the bus to a safer distance,” said the DB official.
Conductor Yasin was driving the bus when it hit Abrar at Basundhara Gate in Nadda and killed him. Yasin fled after the accident.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRT) had cancelled the route permit of the Suprabhat Paribahan bus on the day the accident occurred. Later, it banned all buses and minibuses operated by Suprabhat Paribahan in the city.
Sirajul, the driver, had a licence to drive light vehicle only, but he was driving the bus, a heavy vehicle, said DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam.
The police will take the next step after recording the statements of the detainees, he said when the journalists asked if bus owner Nani Gopal, another accused in the case, would be arrested.
A case has been filed over Abrar’s death, said the additional commissioner, adding that another case would be filed over the accident that injured Mukta.
“We are waiting for the probe report within a month.”
