Two people were killed and 15 others injured during arbitration in Dirai upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Afiz Ullah, 65, son of late Kacha Miah, and Nur Ahmed, 30, son of Abdul Haque of Kalinagar village in the upazila.
Police and locals said a youth, Nahid, damaged the battery-run auto-rickshaw of Jewel Miah of the village 10-12 days ago which went to arbitration. The arbitration with the local UP member in the chair on Wednesday asked Nahid to pay Tk 20,000 as compensation which he accepted. However, Jewel demanded Tk 50,000.
At one stage, two groups locked into a clash over the issue.
A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee that left Afiz and Nur dead on the spot and 15 people injured. On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control, said officer-in-charge of Dirai Police Station Anisur Rahman.
