UNB, Dhaka :
The privately-run Summit Group hopes to put into operation another two power plants in months to boost the country’s power generation now hovering at over 6,300 MW, officials said Saturday.
The power plants are 335 MW Summit Meghnaghat Power; and 341 MW Summit Bibiyana II plant.
Officials hope the two plants will add at least 500 MW to the national grid next year.
Summit Meghnghat’s simple cycle unit has been in operation for last few months producing over 160 MW.
According to sources at PDB and Summit Group the local power giant is preparing for putting the combined cycle unit at Meghanaghat into operation from October.
The Summit Group’s Bibiyana II Plant’s simple cycle unit will come into operation from December 2014.
Summit Group chairman Mohammed Aziz Khan said his group has been making all out efforts to keep the schedule unchanged. “We’re working round the clock to put the units in operation as per schedule,” he told UNB.
Summit Group has signed several contracts with state-run PDB, PGCB, Petrobangla, and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to set dual-fuel 341 MW combined cycle power plant at Meghnaghat
of Narayanganj having its 226.6 MW simple cycle unit and also for similar capacity gas-fired Bibiyana II power plant at Bibiyana in Sylhet region.
American Electric major General Electric (GE) is its partner in both the projects having 20 percent share in each plant while Summit holds 80 percent of the shares.
Summit has engaged a Chinese consortium of NEPC and CNEEC as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor to install the both the Meghnaghat and Bibiyana plants.
