Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) on Monday expressed its doubt about holding a free and fair municipal election across the country with the increasing number violence.
“Though the Election Commission (EC) has adequate power to take action against the perpetrators, it remains silent,” said President of Sujon M Hafizuddin Khan at a press conference held in the capital’s Mukti Bhaban yesterday.
“The silence mood of the Election Commission is responsible for the rising violence throughout the country,” he said.

M Hafizuddin Khan said, the Municipal poll is the test case of EC. “The EC has to prove its capability holding a free and fair Municipal election, which will delight the nation,” he said.
Sujan’s General Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder said that at least 50 incidents of violence had been reported between December 7 and 26 leaving at least three people killed and 271 others injured.
The Constitution has given power to the EC to take necessary actions for holding a fair election, and to cancel voting if necessary. But no action has yet been taken till date.
He also criticised EC’s decision of limiting the journalists’ access to the polling centers during the election and demanded cancellation of decision.
Columnist Abul Maksud said, he does not see any environment to hold a free and fair election, as violence is on rise day by day.
The Municipality polls are scheduled to be held on December 30 across the country – the first of its kind to be held under political party banners.
