A five-year (FY) plan involving Taka 234 crore has been taken to develop Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital (ShSMCH) as a model health care institution.
“The Planning Ministry has approved a Taka 234-crore project to implement the FY plan for turning the hospital into a model one,” ShSMCH Director Professor Dr Uttam Kumar Barua told media.
Under the project, the existing three-storey building of the hospital will be elevated to a six-storey one by November 2018, he said, adding that another 10-storey multipurpose building will be built under the supervision of Public Works Department (PWD) in two to three years.
A PWD committee has already approved the design of the 10-storey building and it is now awaiting approval of a high-level inter-ministerial committee, Uttam Kumar said.
The vertical extension work of the building will start after the approval by the inter-ministerial committee, he added.
Another plan has also been taken to increase the number of beds from 850 to 1,600 to improve the quality of healthcare services to the patients, the ShSMCH director said, adding that the plan also will include building dormitories for the physicians, adding 10 new beds to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and building a 10-bed High Dependency Unit (HDU).
Uttam Kumar said the process of bringing the hospital under automation is going on to ensure the world standard services.
Mentioning that there is no world standard emergency service at government or private hospitals in the country, he said the ShSMC hospital authorities have a plan of constructing a modern emergency complex.
A project titled ‘Quality Improvement Care’ (QIC) is being implemented in the hospital to keep the hospital clean and improve the quality of medical services, the ShSMCH director said.
There are 43 committees in the hospital comprising physicians, nurses and cleaners for implementing the QIC project, he added.
Uttam Kumar said a ‘One-stop Cash Counter’ has been set up in the hospital to ensure all kinds of pathological tests at low costs and save time of the patients.
About Taka 300 crore revenue has been collected from the service since its inception on April 1 this year, he said, adding 800 patients receive the service daily.
About success of the hospital, Uttam Kumar said the ShSMCH has got recognition of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the quality of its services.
It was also awarded the ‘Best Award in Government Sector’ in 2015, he added.
