Sugarcane farming is gaining popularity day-by-day in Sylhet region .
With this some people have started producing Gur (molasses) locally in different areas of Sunamganj district for the last 2 or 3 years, a number of farmers said last week.
According to the DAE officials, sugarcane is cultivated on about 200 hectares this year in Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar districts of Sylhet. However, some other people cultivate it on their homesteads for chewing purposes and local sale. Terming the figure as conservative an official said, it would rise more in months.
While visiting some villages in Tahirpur and Biswambharpur upazilas on the Meghalayan frontier recently this correspondent found a number of small family-based factories for producing Gur from their own crop lands in Tahirpur upazila.
A well-to-do farmer Sabbir Alam of bordering village Laurergarh said not many farmers are interested in Sugarcane as it takes longer period to get harvested. But even then many people are coming up with the high yielding variety farming of the crop. Each and every part of sugarcane plant is usable, he said.
Deputy Director of DAE, Sylhet Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid said normally some farmers cultivate it mainly for chewing purposes and for local sale. However, yet there is scopes for raising the crop’s farming in this region for producing Gur on commercial basis, he added we advise the farmers to prefer high yielding varieties like.
Alam earned Tk 60,000 from 2 hectares land this year. The Gur produced is easily sold on the local markets, he informed.
