Sugarcane farming gains popularity in Narsingdi

Sugarcane cultivation has gaining popularity in Narisngdi district due to higher economic prospect of the crop.
A good number of farmers in the six upazilas of the district have involved themselves in commercial cultivation of sugarcane during the dost 20 years and achieved economic self -reliant.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension Office, farmers of the district have cultivated two kinds of sugarcane in the district, one for making molasses and sugar and another used for sucking drink as sugarcane in a nutritious drink.
Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension, Narsingdi Suvash ChondroGagan told The New Nation that this year farmers of the district totally cultivated sugarcane on 390 hectors in the district. The upazila wise cultivation are Sadar 60 hectares, Shibpur 35 hectares, Polash 125 hectares, Raipura 90 hectares, Balabo 40 hectares and Monohardi 50 hectares.
The Deputy Director said cultivation of sugarcane is more profitable the others erop. Farmers during the last five years have raised a number of lands in the district and they are at present harvesting huge quantity of sugarcane for supplying in the near sugar mills and for making molasses privately.
The New Nation correspondent recently visited different upazilas of the district found that the enthusiastic farmers field are working in their sugarcane while taking to New Nation farmer Abdul Hai of sader upazlia, Abdur Rahman of Belabo upazila, Abdul Aziz of polash upazila, Iqbal Hossain of Raipura upazila and Hobib miah of Monohardi upazila said that cultivated more land this year then previous year as they are getting fair price by selling sugarcane this year.
