Sugarcane crushing at Natore Sugar Mills began on Friday with a target of producing 13,150 tonnes of sugar by crushing 170,000 tonnes of sugarcane during the current 2015-16 season.
Industries Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan formally inaugurated the crushing programme at a simple ceremony here.
Addressing the occasion, the secretary said the government has stepped up different efforts to make the sugar industry a profitable organization.
He added that the government has also a plan of refining raw sugar during the off season.
Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation Chairman AKM Delwar Hossain said considering welfare of the farmers the government has increased the purchasing price of sugarcane by Taka 25 per quintal.
He urged the farmers to supply sugarcane to the mills to fulfill the sugar production target.
Managing Director of the mills Mohammad Abul Rafiq, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Moshiur Rahman and farmer Moaij Uddin Sarker, among others, spoke on the occasion.
