Prices of potatoes and sugar have gone up in the retail markets in Dhaka ahead of Ramzan even as wholesale prices have remained stable.
The prices of the two essential items were up by Tk 2 per kg in stores and markets across the city on Friday.
Loose sugar was sold for Tk 46-48 per kg, which one month ago was Tk 43-45.
Bangladesh Sugar Traders Association President Sher Mohammad said the wholesale prices of sugar were unchanged.
“For a month we have been selling a maund (37.5 kg) of sugar for Tk 1,500 1,550. I don’t know why the price has gone up in retail markets,” he said.
“But there’s no need to be worried about sugar during Ramadan. There’s enough government and private stock,” he added. State-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is selling sugar for Tk 40 per kg at 28 spots in the capital.
Sugar demand usually doubles during Ramadan.
According to a commerce ministry report the monthly demand for sugar is 130,000 tonnes, whereas in Ramadan it climbs to 300,000 tonnes.
A kilogram of potato is selling for Tk 18-20 per kg in the market. A week ago this price was Tk 16-18.
