Sufferings of the consumers have mounted owing to soaring prices of Liquefied Petroleum (LP) gas cylinders in Rangpur.
According to sources , prices of different companies of LP gas have shot up in local markets, much to the worry of the consumers. Especially the lower and middle income groups of people are the worst sufferers of the situation.
Presently, a cylinder (12 kg) of Basundhara, Jamuna, Total and Omera LP Gas is being sold at Tk 1,160 to Tk 1,130 in local markets whereas it was sold at Tk 930 to Tk 950 only 3 weeks ago, sources alleged.
Some consumers alleged that officials of district administration and law enforcing agencies seem to be reluctant to monitor LP gas price. As a result its price is soaring without any hindrance, they added.
On the other hand, the private gas distributors, in collusion with the local retailers, are allegedly increasing gas prices, it is alleged.
Mostafizur Rahman Bablu, a resident at Tanti para area in Rangpur city told this the New Nation that sudden price hike of LP gas has become a burden for the people of middle income like him. Due to lack of proper monitoring system LPG price is increasing, he alleged.
A good number of consumers said they are now using firewood as LP gas prices have gone beyond their buying capacity.
A number of retailers of LP gas in the city said they have no way but to sell gas at exorbitant prices, as the companies increased its price. In this circumstances consumers laid emphasis on strong monitoring at local markets to check abnormal price hike of LP gas.
