Tension prevails at BSMMU: VC hopes early solution

The tense situation centering confrontation between two groups of physicians at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) prevailed for four consecutive days on Sunday leading to immense sufferings to the patients. The authorities in the morning sat in a meeting to resolve the deadlock, but it ended inconclusively without any outcome, the meeting sources said.
The meeting was held in the Dr Milton Hall of the university around 10am and continued till 12:30 pm presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU Prof Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan.
 “The rival groups met together to discuss how to overcome tensions, but it ended without any fruitful result,” a doctor who attended the meeting told The New Nation wishing anonymity.
Healthcare services were disrupted due to the meeting which kept all the chairmen and senior professors busy for two and a half hours.
Many patients were seen standing in longue queue for several hours, worsening their suffering. Many of them expressed their anger over the ongoing crisis created by the top bosses of the university.
They demanded immediate solution to the present crisis.
 “I had to wait for more than two hours at outdoor department of the hospital. But I had to return home without getting medical service. This is not acceptable to us ,” Monir Uddin, who came from city’s Jatrabari area, told The New Nation with a note of frustration.
When asked, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan told The New Nation on Sunday night that the varsity administration was working sincerely to resolve the deadlock. “Hopefully, you will get a good result in a day or two,” he added.
The tension has been prevailing since Thursday as the VC reportedly assaulted Pro-VC [Academic] Prof ASM Zakaria Swapan over publishing of a report on nurses’ recruitment in a Bengali daily recently.
Both the VC and the Pro-VC traded blamed each other at the meeting. VC termed the pro-VC as “criminal and goon” while the pro-VC termed the VC “corrupt.”
Pointing out different corruption allegations against the VC, the pro-VC urged all the professors to protest from their respective position.
Refuting the allegations brought against him, the VC said he would handle any misconduct with iron hand.
On Saturday the supporters of the VC and the Pro-VC were locked in scuffle disrupting badly healthcare services.
Meanwhile, the high-ups of the BSMMU is likely to sit with Health Minister Mohammad Nasim on Tuesday as their last resort to put an end to the prevailing tension.
