Sudden rainfall of Monday damaged huge raw (un-burnt) bricks of 104 brick kilns in Jhenaidah for at least Taka nine crore.
The brick kiln owners of Jhenaidah Sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, Moheshpur, Sailkupa and Harinakundu were at a loss when the massacre occurred throughout the night on Monday.
The situation may lead the price hike of the bricks in the current season as most of the traders have been running the business with bank loans, said some of the brick kiln owners.
Goutam KUmar Ganguli, owner of Paul Bricks at Ramnagar village of Jhenaidah Sadar said, at least 10 lakh raw bricks were ready at his kiln for curing in the brick kiln. Moreover huge bricks were kept in the kiln for final burning.
But the bricks were damaged when the sudden rainfall stated in the night. He will have to incur the loss for at least taka 30 lakh. Further, another Taka two lakh is required to remove the damaged bricks from the kiln for further brick manufacturing purposaes, he said.
Goutam Ganguli said, the brick kiln traders like him prepare 50 lakh to 60 lakh of bricks a season every year. The same preparation was going on there.
Hazzel Haque, owner of Moheshpur Bricks in bordering Moheshpur upazila said, four share holders were running the brick kiln. At least four lakh raw bricks in the kiln were damaged due to rainfall on the night of Monday, he said.
Some brick kiln owners said, raw bricks at Koyargachhi, Narikelbarisa , Bishoykhali, Salabhara and other places of Jhenaidah Sadar, Barobazer, Dulalmundia in Kaliganj, Phulbari in Kotchandpur, Sailkupa, Bhatai, Noupara in Sailkupa, Chandpur, Bhaina in Harinakundu were damaged by the rainfall. they said.
