A sudden rain on Tuesday afternoon submerged some areas of the capital, causing immense sufferings to the commuters.

Apart from waterlogging, the moderate rain also caused traffic gridlocks in some parts of the city, including Mirpur Road, Firmgate and Shahbagh areas, as the submerged roads slowed down vehicular movement.

The rainwater submerged Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Gopibagh, Motijheel, Paltan, Rampura, Merul Badda, Bijoy Sarani, Kazipara, Shewrapara and many areas including Gandaria in old Dhaka due to poor drainage system.

The city dwellers had to face trouble failing to get transports after the office hours. Auto-rickshaw drivers and rickshaw-pullers charged excessive fares from the passengers in absence of sufficient transports on the roads.

Low-income people, especially the day labourers, suffered much as rain disrupted their normal pace of life.

Commuters faced unbearable miseries while travelling through the roads connecting Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar Eskaton, Dilu Road, Siddheswari, Shastrasta and Rampura areas as the roads that developed deep potholes due to the construction work of Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover went under water, putting them at risk of accidents.

Many people were seen wading through filthy water. Stinks from drains mixed with the stagnant water added to the woes of the pedestrians.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places of Sylhet and Chittagong divisions during the next 24 hours commencing from 6pm on Wednesday due to the active monsoon, said Met office.
