To the locals, Alamgir is now known as a dragon fruit farmer.
Farmer Alamgir said, I have returned my grandfather’s tradition is to cultivate paddy, I am not interested in it. So one day I talked to the Deputy Assistant Officer of Agriculture. He introduced me to dragon farming. So, on his advice, I started planting dragon fruit on 1 bigha of land, with which it has cost Tk. only Pink or Bari 1 dragon saplings have been planted in the garden. I sell fruits at Tk. 300 per kg, I have sold fruits worth Tk. 1 lakh so far. I am very happy, hopefully I will plant it in more places. The age of the garden is about one year. It has started selling flowers in eight months and fruits in 45 days. The first year also bears fruit. People from far and wide, including the crowded areas to see and buy the fruit.
Pillars are placed on the ground to keep the dragon trees straight.
An abandoned easybike tire is tied to the head of each pillar by placing pillars across the ground at a certain distance from the ground. Dragon saplings are planted next to the pillars.
Visiting the garden, it can be seen that the dragon trees, which look like cactus trees, are already touching the heads of the cement poles. Due to the favourable weather conditions for dragon farming, dragon seedlings have already become quite mature.
Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Ashraful Alam said the soil and climate of the area are quite suitable for dragon farming. We are always visiting the garden on behalf of the Upazila Agriculture Extension Office and giving appropriate advice to the farmers.
In this regard, Upazila Agriculture Officer Khizir Hossain Pramanik said, Dragon has been cultivated in a total of three hectares of land in Bijoyanagar. We encourage the farmers with all kinds of technical support from seedlings to seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. There are four varieties of dragons, such as yellow, white, pink, and pink. Invented by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Bari 1- which is known as Pink. This pink variety of dragon fruit is also delicious to eat. Once the tree is planted, the fruit can be harvested for six months in a year. It is possible to extract 1 ounce of fruit from a tree. And fruits can be harvested for 20 years. Lighting needs to be provided on the trees as severe winters can affect fruit production.
This success will also inspire other farmers in the area. Apart from being self-reliant, farmer Alamgir is dreaming of making another contribution in the field of agriculture by revolutionizing dragon farming in his upazila.
