Fake and date expired cosmetics are selling widely in online shops across the country. If is serious health risks for the users.
Law enforcers are frequently conducting raid and seizing lots of fake and expired local and foreign cosmetics.
On Thursday, Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) drive conducted a against online beauty shops in the capital Mirpur area.
Rashida Akhter, Executive Magistrate of BSTI led the raid and seized lots of lower standard, fake and expiry cosmetics products including Shampoo and collect fines.
The officials said the mobile court fined Tk one lakh to ‘Newshopbd’ an online beauty shop and also seized huge number of adulterated shampoo and other products from another store named ‘Consumer Supershop’.
Sources said, during the corona pandemic, online businesses are on rise across the world.
In this condition, a portion of dishonest businesspersons are using it as a chance to make money selling substandard cosmetics products on the name of beauty products.
Public health experts warned against regular use of such substandard and fake cosmetic products, as it may cause serious health hazards.
It might be sources of many diseases, including skin cancer as number of harmful heavy metals and chemicals are found with those items.
Not only the fake cosmetics, substandard and expire dates cosmetics also pose serious health threats as excessive level of mercury, lead, chromium and cadmium are found in different research work in fairness creams and other cosmetics.
Sources said such hazardous cosmetics are flooded in so-called online beauty item’s shops.
The customers are not only being cheated using such beauty items after purchasing those with huge amount of money, they are also buying serious health threats from those shops.
When contacted, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, former Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) told The New Nation on Thursday, “Serious harmful raw materials are containing in every substandard cosmetics which might are causing adverse skin disease among the users.”
He warned also that such fake and substandard quality cosmetics might cause skin cancer also.
Experts said, that people, especially females mainly use cosmetics for two reasons, one is beauty and skin protection from environmental damage.
Women who are working in offices, and school and college girls are the main target group of the online shops. They used to buy those products to protect their skin from dust and sun shines but are being victims of those dishonest traders.
People are being exposed to different harmful diseases using of those fake cosmetics items manufactured by harmful stuffs.
A study conducted on September 2019 found that most of the skin whitening creams selling in markets in the country are containing higher levels of mercury than the level permissible.
European Environmental Bureau and some Social Development Organisations conducted the study as part of an anti-mercury campaign. The study found that above 16,000 parts per million mercury are found in fairness creams whereas its permissible level set by WHO is only 1.0 ppm.
“In these circumstances, only government could not do anything to stop the dishonest people, a social awareness is a must to stop such hazardous business,” Professor Nazrul Islam suggested.
