Subjects on tax, VAT, customs to be launched at public varsities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is going to introduce subjects on ‘Income Tax’ ‘Value Added Tax’ and ‘Customs’ at all public universities in the country.
A section of top officials of the UGC have been asked to prepare guidelines to materialise the matter, the commission sources said.
They said, the UGC will sit with the famous and eminent professors of the public universities to discuss the matter. If the commission gets positive signals from the professors then it will be placed to the Education Ministry.
A meeting with the vice-chancellors of the public universities will be held after getting nod of the Education Ministry. They will also be requested to launch the subjects to improve the country’s higher education.
UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan told The New Nation yesterday that the commission had taken a plan to introduce subjects like income tax, VAT and customs. “It will definitely help flourishing our national economy.
The courses will also fulfill our demand of skilled manpower related to tax customs departments in the country,” he said.
“Many subjects and courses are being introduced to meet the challenges of globalisation. It is the demand of time to introduce new subjects like VAT and tax for our higher education,” the UGC chairman said.
The commission sources further said that it would ask the national university to introduce diploma courses and other professional courses on the aforementioned subjects.
The UGC also held a meeting with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in this regard recently.
UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan was att3ended that meeting as the chief guest while NBR Chairman Md Najibur Rahman presided over it.
Najibur Rahman assured the UGC that the NBR would launch internship programme in this connection, the meeting sources said.
He said, the NBR has already discussed the matter with its top officials and they gave positive nod to launch the programme.
“The economic development will be improved if the programme is launched widely,” he said.
