Stuttgart stun Dortmund in Bundesliga

For the first time in 14 years, Stuttgart secured all three points at Dortmund after a 5-1 away victory in the Bundesliga’s 11th round on Saturday.
An uninspired Borussia Dortmund was unable to stop Stuttgart’s Silas Wamangituka, who provided a brace to move his side into the Bundesliga’s top six.
The Swabians took the reins on the road and created momentum from the start, as Borna Sousa and Tanguy Coulibaly pulled wide from promising positions.
Dortmund was stunned by the visitors’ powerful performance and lacked ideas to repel Stuttgart’s attacks.
With 27 minutes played, the floodgates were opened as Dortmund’s Emre Can brought down Mateo Klimowicz inside the penalty area. Wamangituka kept his nerve from the spot after sending Roman Burki into the right corner while drilling the ball into the top left corner.
The “BVB” wobbled and struggled to contain Stuttgart as Coulibaly danced through Dortmund’s defence and tested Burki, who parried the shot into the path of Klimowicz, whose attempt from very close range missed the target in the 30th minute.
Instead of having a two-goal lead, it was Dortmund who leveled the scores against the run of the game as Raphael Guerreiro’s deep through-ball allowed youngster Giovanni Reyna to make it 1-1 before the break.
Lucien Favre’s men made a bright start to the second half, but it was Stuttgart who grabbed the lead once again after Orel Mangala forced a turnover at the edge of his own box before sending Wamangituka on his way to beat Burki from seven meters with 53 minutes gone.
Dortmund was unable to put up resistance seven minutes later as Sosa’s square pass into the box found Philipp Forster, who made it 3-1 from 11 meters despite several Dortmund players in close attendance.
Things went from bad to worse only at the hour mark as Klimowicz’s golden chance was denied by the right post before Coulibaly shrugged off defender Mats Hummels to establish a three-goal lead in the 62nd minute.
The fourth goal was a wake-up call for Dortmund and the hosts showed vital signs in the 87th minute when Reyna overcame Stuttgart goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. However, the goal was revoked by VAR for an offside.
Newly-promoted Stuttgart was still not done with scoring and rounded off the game with a late goal as Nicolas Gonzalez completed the job following a pass into his path from Mangala in injury-time.
With the win, Stuttgart recorded its fourth win of the season to climb to sixth place, while Dortmund suffered its fourth loss of the season to slump to fifth in the table.
“It was a disaster, a lousy performance. We made too many mistakes. Our performance is hard to explain. Stuttgart played very well but we staged a poor performance,” Dortmund coach Lucien Favre said.
Elsewhere, RB Leipzig move atop the standings for the moment as Julian Nagelsmann’s men eased 2-0 past hapless Werder Bremen.
Second-half goals from Vincenzo Grifo and Jeong Woo-Yeong helped struggling Freiburg to take crucial points after overcoming newcomers Arminia Bielefeld 2-0.
Borussia Monchengladbach held Hertha Berlin to a 1-1 stalemate after Breel Embolo canceled out Matteo Guendouzi’s second-half opener, and Cologne downed bottom side Mainz 1-0.
