The students with disabilities and special needs require proper attention, opportunities and facilities to become educated and worthy citizens through flourishing their enormous latent talents.
The physically challenged students might contribute their maximum to the nation building activities if special steps taken by the government were properly implemented along with taking some other necessary steps.
According to executives of various organisations working with persons with disabilities, proper care and attention can ensure welfare of the children with disabilities and special needs for their mainstreaming through proper development.
President of Rangdhanu District Protibondhi Adhikar Sangstha (PAS) of Rangpur Nur Alam said there were many talented students with different kinds of physical, mental and intellectual disabilities in the society.
President of Kanthalbari PAS in Kurigram Bimal Chandra Sarker said hundreds of disabled students were getting GPA-5, GPA-4 and GPA-3 in SSC, HSC or equivalent examinations every year to achieve necessary qualifications for higher education.
President of Prottyasha Protibondhi Nari O Shishu Unnayan Sangstha Ummey Kulsum said the disabled students were coming out with brilliant results in the examinations by struggling with uncountable hurdles amid abject poverty and neglects.
“If the fixed special admission quotas were properly complied with at university level, more brilliant students with disabilities could become university graduates,” said Azizar Rahman, President of Progati PAS in Lalmonirhat.
Programme Support Officer of ADD International Tamzida Zannati Shilpi said many talented disabled students could work for the nation equally like others if provided with necessary attention, facilities and chances.
Physically challenged Saidar Rahman said that he got admission in the Department of English at Rangpur Carmichael College in the 2008-2009 academic sessions after getting GPA-5 in the SSC and GPA-3.20 in the HSC examinations.
“I got Taka 1,000 monthly stipend as a physically disabled student from Department of Social Services till completing honours course in 2013,” he said adding that he was continuing masters course and getting Taka 1,200 monthly stipend currently.
President of District Employment Implementation Committee for Physically Challenged People Advocate MA Basher Tipu stressed on further increasing admission quota and amount of stipend so that students with disabilities could get higher education and jobs.
