DU Correspondent :
The Progressive Students’ Alliance and Anti-Imperialist Students Union on Sunday gave a four-day ultimatum to the government to arrest the rapists and killers of Tonu, or face the siege on April 7.
They came up with the announcement at a press conference around 12:00 noon at the Madhu’s Canteen of the University.
The alliance leader Ashraful Alam Shohel said, if the government foils the siege programme, they would go for tougher movement.
Blasting Home Minister’s claim that few incidents of rape do not indicate deterioration of law and order, Ashraful, said such comments from the Minister would encourage the rapists and would prove their apathetic behaviour about the matter.
Dhaka University wore a deserted look as students observed the strike. It was supported by 13 left-leaning student organisations.
The protesting students brought out several processions on the DU campus since morning, though few classes and examinations were held.
Around 4 pm, a solidarity rally also held at the base of Raju sculpture on the campus, where speakers said that already 14 days have elapsed after Tonu’s rape and murder inside a restricted area, but law enforcers failed to make any progress into the matter.
They also demanded speedy trials of the perpetrators without any delay to ensure womens’ safety in the society.
Meanwhile, no classes and examinations were held at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and Eden University College.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union also called a nationwide students’ strike at schools and colleges on Monday, protesting the gruesome incident.
Tonu, 19, a second year student of history department of Comilla Victoria College and a cultural activist, was raped and murdered inside Comilla Cantonment on March 20, hours after she went out of their home at the Cantonment Residential area.
