Leaders of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council on Friday demanded immediate removal of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall Provost Professor Sabita Rizwana for forcing several students out of the dormitory, triggering a fresh trouble on the campus.
“Ousting the students from the residential hall at midnight shows the moral degradation of the provost,” said Nurul Huq Nur, joint convener of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council.
He was speaking after a protest rally at Dhaka University campus, in participation of several hundred, brought out in condemnation of the Sufia Kamal Hall incident.
Nur also said the authority want to instill panic among the students who took part in the quota reform movements.
They urged the DU authorities to remove hall Provost Professor Sabita Rizwana immediately; otherwise threatened to take to the streets again along with the general students.
Another joint convener of the platform Mohammad Rashed Khan said, “Those who took part in the movement are getting death threats
and conspiracies are being created against them.”
He also urged the authorities to bring back the students to the hall with dignity.
Meanwhile, on Thursday midnight at least five female students were ousted from Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall allegedly for ‘spreading rumors on Facebook’ before April 11-protest against hall unit Bangladesh Chhatra League President Iffat Jahan Esha.
The hall provost, Sabita Rezwana Rahman, of microbiology department only confirmed the news of two female students and claimed they had involved in spreading ‘rumors’ on Facebook on the night of April 10.
Afterwards, the hall provost stopped receiving phone calls and the office gate was restricted for anyone to get into it.
At about 10:30pm, Kamrunnahar Liza of the theater and performance studies and Farhin of mathematics department were seen leaving their halls with their local guardians.
After 30 minutes, Sharmin of mathematics department was seen leaving the dormitory with her relatives. Her relatives said the hall authorities asked them not to talk to anyone about the incident.
At about 12:45am on Friday, one Faruk entered into the dormitory as the authorities called him to pick her daughter. Faruk said his daughter was not present on April 10 night, as her grandfather had died.
Faruk said he had asked the authorities what his daughter had done but they refused to reply.
The students said at about 5:30pm on Thursday the provost called eight girls in her room and seized their mobiles.
As there was tension among the students, the university vice-chancellor M Akhtaruzzaman and proctor Golam Rabbani said that it is rumor nothing happened there.
But on the Friday morning the VC told the media, three students of Sufia Kamal Hall were handed over to their guardians on Thursday for spreading rumors in social media.
Talking to journalists at his office, he said it was the responsibility of the hall authority to inform the guardians after identifying those students who are spreading false information
Meanwhile, around 1:30am on Friday Yasin Arafat, a student of International Business Department, staged a solo protest calling for the resignation of the provost.
Some leaders of the platform, including convener Hasan Al Mamun and joint convener Nurul Haque Nur, rushed to the scene and led him away.
“Why did the authorities call guardians in the middle of the night asking them to take away students from the hall? It’s a heinous incident.”
Earlier on April 13, ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League reinstated Iffat as the president of the hall unit in 48 hours of her expulsion amid protests against her reported assault on organisation fellows.
On April 11, proctor Golam Rabbani said that Iffat was expelled from the university and ‘Esha said she was sorry for what she did.’
Footage that went viral showed that Iffat was given a garland of shoes after she said sorry.
