Students of Jahangirnagar, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Khulna universities yesterday alleged that police and ruling party student activists blocked their programs for Monday in solidarity with protesting students in the capital and all over the country demanding safe road and justice for killing two students in road accidents.
Our Correspondent from Jahangirnagar University at Savar reported that both the university authorities and Bangladesh Chatra League activists prevented general students from coming out of the campus to take part in March to Dhaka program.
They had chalked out the march program in demand for resignation of shipping
minister Shahjahasn Khan for his unsavory comments on the death of the two students and implementation of 8-point demands that include justice for the killing.
When students gathered in at Shaheed Minar point law enforcers were on guard so that they can’t go out of the campus while the varsity authorities closed the main gate. BCL men were making motorbike demonstration to frighten the students.
The varsity authority also refused to provide transport to the students for journey to the city thereby making the program unsuccessful.
Students of Chittagong University gathered in front of the Chittagong Press Club on Monday morning to protest the use of force on protesting students in Dhaka on Sunday but BCL activists dispersed the students to join the human chain on the spot.
The incident took place when hundreds of students gathered in the area.
Meanwhile police joined the BCL men to disrupt the program.
Chittagong Kotwali Police allegedly picked up at least nine students for interrogation from the spot, reports our local correspondent.
Jahidul Islam, inspector (investigation) Kotwali Police said the students were picked up for security reasons.”We don’t know for sure whether these demonstrators are actually students or not”, the inspector added.
“Hence, to ensure their identity, we are taking these students with us”, he said adding that this step was not taken to harass anyone.
Our Rajshahi Correspondent reports:
Students of Rajshahi University (RU) on Monday held demonstration on their campus condemning the recent attack on students during the safe road demonstration in the capital and all over the country.
Around 300 students formed a human chain on the Paris Road around 11:30am.
Later, they brought out a silent procession condemning attacks on students in the capital.
Students of many departments also boycotted classes on Monday in protest of attacks.
In Khulna students held demonstration in the varsity and paraded through the campus protesting attack on students in Dhaka and demanding safe road.
Police and varsity authorities prevented them from going out closing the main gate but at one stage opened the gate to let them out.
