The students of seven government colleges affiliated with the Dhaka University (DU) are now virtually helpless, as they do not get solution of their academic activities neither from the DU nor their respective colleges.
The Dhaka University authorities say that they have no adequate manpower to resolve the students’ problem immediately.
On the other hand, the college authorities are reluctant to take any responsibility of the students what they say it is now matter of Dhaka University and they (college authorities) have no power to do anything.
Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Professor Akhtaruzzaman told The New Nation on Thursday that the DU will only oversee the academic activities of the colleges.
About the affiliation of the colleges, he said, “We have no sufficient manpower and other infrastructure to run the academic activities of the colleges. The DU authorities showed interest to affiliate the colleges hiding the real facts.”
Meanwhile, the students of DU affiliated Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardi College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Govt. Women College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College said that they have no guardian now.
“We went to the principals for resolving our problems. They send us to the DU authorities. But the DU administration tells us that solution of the problems is in the colleges. So what we will do now,” Shah Paran Ripon, a student of Kabi Nazrul Government College said.
A press conference was scheduled to be held in the Modhus’ Canteen on the DU campus on Thursday demanding immediate announcement of their 4th year examination results. But the DU administration did not permit the students to hold any press conference on the campus.
The university imposed a section on any activities of the students of seven affiliated colleges on the DU campus.
Acting Proctor of the university Dr A M Amzad said the students of the affiliated colleges have no right to stage any demonstration on the campus. The authorities have banned all the activities of the colleges from Thursday.
He said, “It is only for the security of the university. The students of the colleges try to disorder the congenial academic activities of the university.”
“We have 104 more affiliated colleges. About one lakh students are studying there. New seven affiliated colleges have also about two lakh students. If we give them permission to do everything on the DU campus, the congenial academic atmosphere will be hampered,” he said.
The proctor said that DU has academic relations with the seven colleges. The students of the colleges will not use library, hall, canteen, transport and other facilities.
The students will resolve their problem through their respective colleges. If the college administration fails to take any fruitful decision then they will present it to the university authorities for solution. It is the process, he said.
Seven government colleges had been affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) in February this year under the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Education Ministry.
Since then the students have been demonstrating to press home their different demands, including declaring of examination date and publishing of results.
On July 20, students of seven government colleges, affiliated with the University of Dhaka, staged a demonstration at Shahbagh, demanding that their examination dates and routine be announced in time.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the students.
During the demonstration, Siddiqur Rahman, a student of Titumir Govt College, was injured by a tear gas shell and finally lost his eyesight.
