Students of seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University on Wednesday withdrew their blockade programme agitated in support of their five-point charter of demands upon assurance from the university authorities.
Their demands include publishing flawless results of all departmental examinations within 90 days of examinations, causes of failure in all examination results, a separate administrative building for seven colleges, teachers of Dhaka University must take a class in every department at least two days in a month and publication of academic calendar along with crash programme to reduce session jam.
Vehicular movement on busy Mirpur Road remained halted from 11:00am to 02:30pm as hundreds of students from the colleges started demonstrating for the second consecutive day blocking the major intersection that caused a long tailback on Mirpur Road and was gradually spreading to adjacent areas.
At 1:30pm, DU Proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabbani went to the agitating students and urged them to withdraw their programme with assurance that their demands will be met. But the protesting students paid no heed to his assurance and continued their blockade at Nilkhet till 2:30pm.
Meanwhile, a press release from the university issued on Wednesday said that the university authorities were sincere to meet their demands and DU VC would hold meeting with principles of seven colleges regarding this on April 28.
Later, a 14-member delegation of the students held meeting with DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Akhtaruzzaman in his office in the evening.
BM Shaheen, a master’s student of accounting department of Dhaka College and one of the coordinators of the movement, said that they would not stop on mere assurance.
He further said that they would announce their next course of actions today (Thursday) at Dhaka College canteen around 10:00am after holding a press conference.
The seven affiliated colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College.
