Hundreds of Jahangirnagar University (JU) students went berserk and vandalized 30 buses and set ablaze several vehicles following the death of a female student who was killed as pickup van knocked her down in front of the university main gate on Wednesday afternoon.Earlier, the angry student blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway at 5.30pm to protest the death of their female fellow.The deceased was identified as Fatema Khatun, 22, a third year student of Anthropology department and a resident student of Pritilota Hall. She hailed from Shathia Upazila of Pabna.Witnesses said, Fatema was waiting for Dhaka-bound bus near to the JU gate beside the highway with two others when the pickup van crushed into her at around 4.45pm.The driver lost control over the steering and knocked down Fatema, they added.Fatema died on the spot while two others have been rushed to a local private clinic. The wounded — a dairy farm employee and his wife – were soon whisked off to Dhaka.JU proctor Tapan Kumar Shaha confirmed the incident.The van driver however received injuries in another accident at CMB area of Savar, nearly two kilometres off the university. He also rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.The university vice-chancellor Farzana Islam reached the spot and was talking with the agitating students to calm them till the report was filed at 8:10pm.The students raised four-point demand including — paying compensation to the victim’s family, widening the road in front of the JU gate, building a foot over bridge and putting on speed limit in the university area.
