Young graduates in a new move demonstrated yesterday at city’s busy Shabagh intersection demanding to raise in age limit for government jobs to 35 years from 30 now while the quota movement remained temporarily suspended waiting government gazette abolishing the quota system as promised by the Prime Minister two weeks ago.
Demonstrators seeking the rise in age limit for government jobs have called
for accepting their demanded before the Public Service Commission (PSC)
notification for 37th BCS examination.
They carried a ‘token kofin’ yesterday to highlight their determination to achieve their demand at any cost while they are also equally agitating for quota reform for unhindered access to government job.
Leaders of the quota reform on Thursday issued an ultimatum on the
government to issue the gazette notification on cancellation of the quota system at least by the end of this month. Otherwise they have threatened to restart the movement again from early next month to secure quota reform for easy access to government job on competitive basis.
It appears that the movement for raising the age limit to the government job may be an extension of the quota movement using a different platform as the university graduates are sufferers in both cases.
Student leaders are making their case saying in the ongoing educational
system a student has to spend up to 27 to 28 years of age to complete the Masters and pass out from the universities.
Two years in their hands is too short to apply and appear for jobs in government services. It passes away quickly when a graduate finds him ineligible to apply for a competitive examinations. So they deserve extension of age limit for eligibility in government jobs, general secretary of Bangladesh Shadharan Chhatra Parishad M A Ali said addressing the gathering at Shahbagh city point.
The demonstrators urged the government to accept their demand; otherwise they would build a fierce movement to achieve their goals.
Later, activists of the platform led by its president Imtiaz Hossain, brought out a coffin march and paraded from Shahbagh to TSC intersection of Dhaka University.
Spot reports said police charged baton on the demonstrators at Shahbagh and detained at least 13 demonstrators as they blocked the city point for an hour drying out transport movement.
Earlier several hundred students from Dhaka University and different colleges gathered at Shahbagh and raised slogans in support of their demands. Jahurul Islam, a student of Dhaka College said they would continue their movement until their demands being met.
Earlier in February this year, several hundred students from Dhaka University
and nearby colleges had blocked the Shahbagh intersection to press home their demand. They were waiting since hoping the concerned authorities would take positive steps in this respect.
Abu Bakr Siddique, Officer in Charge of Shahbagh Police Station told the media that they have dispersed the demonstration and there has been no case so far in this regard till writing this report at 8pm.
But reports said even after the demonstrators were dispersed, they appeared
again in front of National Museum and chanted slogans demanding release of the detainees.
