A group of Dhaka University (DU) students on Tuesday blocked Shahbagh intersection in the capital demanding new dates for Dhaka North and South City Corporation polls which will be held on.
Around 500 students blocked the busy intersection of the city around 5:00 pm to press home their demand, as the election date coincides with Saraswati Puja celebrations. Vehicular movements on the roads through to the intersection were suspended for an hour following the blockade.
The students withdrew their agitation around 6:30 pm, giving an 18-hour ultimatum to the authorities concerned to accept their demand.
They also threatened to besiege the Election Commission office in Agargaon tomorrow if their demand is not met within the deadline.
On December 22, the Election Commission announced that the elections of Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City will be held on January 30.
