Students commit for eradicating child marriage

Over 300 male and female students of Dhukdhukirhat High School under Badarganj upazila have committed for launching social movement to eradicate child marriage and sexual harassment from the upazila.
They took the vow at the quiz and essay writing competitions on ‘Prevention of Child Marriage and Sexual Harassment’ organised by BRAC under its Social Empowerment Programme on the school premises on Wednesday afternoon.
With Chairman of the School Governing Committee Tobarak Hossain in the chair, Chairman of local Damodarpur union parishad Azizul Haque attended prize distribution ceremony of the competitions and distributed prizes as the chief guest.
Headmaster of Dhukdhukirhat High School Nur Hossain Sarker, Senior District Manager of BRAC Sajjad Uzzaman Chowdhury, its officials Shahidul Islam, Rafikul Alam and Jhalo Rani, addressed among others.
More than 1,000 guardians and parents of the area along with the local public representatives, NGO activists, civil society members, community leaders, Imams, Purohits, Marriage Registrars, common men and women of the area were present.
After taking part in the competitions, students of the school took oath to launch social movement through creating awareness narrating negative impacts of child marriage, sexual harassment, dowry and repression to resist these curses from the society.
In their speeches, the speakers narrated the reasons and superstitions behind child marriage that have engulfed the society, especially the poorer section and backward people for decades together with creating unrest in family life and society.
They called upon the public representatives, guardians, teachers and students to set up an example of not arranging any child marriage to free the area from the curse through collective initiatives and rectifying their past mistakes.
The chief guest appreciated the students stressed for their commitment and asked them to play due role along with the teachers, guardians, public representatives and community leaders to prevent any attempt of arranging child marriage in future.
He expressed his firm confidence that the students and young generations would be able to free the society from the curse of child marriage through launching and effective social movement and raising renaissance from every rural area of the upazila.
