‘Students Cabinet’ at school-level shortly

The government is going to introduce “Students cabinet” at secondary schools, madrasas and technical schools level to build the future generation as responsible citizens.
“We want to provide quality education to our children. We want to build them efficient in leading the country as scientists, teachers, doctors, engineers and politicians. So democratic values should be grown up from the student life”. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said on Sunday while inaugurating a workshop organised by Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) at National Academy for Educational Management (NAEM) auditorium in the city.
Education Secretary Md Nazrul Islam Khan also addressed the workshop as special guest with DSHE Director General Professor Fahima Khatun in the chair.
They said the initiative was taken after the successful introduction of 61,191 Student Councils in primary schools that contributed to the development of school environment.
 “We have already instructed two secondary level schools and a Dakhil Madrasa in each upazila to take necessary action to form 7-member Students Cabinet on experimental basis,” said Education Secretary Md Nazrul Islam Khan, who mooted the idea of launching student council.
He said the student council formed in primary schools has been playing a vital role in imparting tolerance of opposition views, leadership quality, ensure hundred percent enrollment and check drop out of students and contribute to the development of school environment.
 “Taking experience from introduction of student council in primary school, the education ministry is going to introduce students cabinet in secondary level schools and Dakhil Madrasas for the same purpose. The election of student cabinet is expected to begin in the secondary level schools and madrasas sometimes in April next,” Khan said.
Director Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS) under education ministry Md Fasiullah said the draft Students Cabinet manual and a plan of action have been sent to the district education officers and senior officials of the ministry for incorporating their opinion in it. “The draft manual and action plan will be finalized within a week or so,” he said.
The tenure of the seven-member student cabinet will be one year and students from class VI to X will have the voting rights. After the election, one of the members of the cabinet will be elected as Prime Minister by voice vote. He or she will distribute portfolio among his or her cabinet, emulating a parliamentary democracy. There will be ministers for education, mid-day meal, environment, health, water resource, teaching material, cultural affairs and sports, reception of guests and others as per recommendation of the general students. Under the education ministry, there are 19,070 secondary schools and each of these schools will have Students Cabinet.
In 2010, primary school children had chosen their leaders-members of student councils at 100 government primary schools in 20 upazilas. Such elections were held in 61,191 government primary schools across the country in 2013 and 2014. Students of classes III and IV and V took part in these elections.
